Yonkers Schools statement on Pay characterized as Overtime

Editor’s Note: The Yonkers School District has provided a detailed explanation of salaries and other compensation received by employees during calendar year 2007. This statement was provided by Bernard P. Pierorazio, superintendent of schools, Yonkers School District. The Journal News is publishing this statement in its entirety.

The following information may be useful in your report concerning overtime:

    • Unlike the format that The Journal News requested the data be provided in (the calendar year January 1 to December 31), the Board of Education works on a fiscal year beginning July 1 and ending June 30.  All of our overtime calculations are based on the July to June fiscal year as you can ascertain from the Board resolutions faxed to The Journal News. Unfortunately, when our report was submitted to The Journal News, in error, we included earnings for those employees who received hourly compensation and coaching stipends in the overtime calculation.

    • In the cases of Frankie Burton and Katia Trevino, both were hourly employees from January Ő07 through August Ő07. They were hired as full time annual employees as of September Ő07. Their hourly earnings were indicated in the overtime column in error, when our report was submitted to The Journal News.

    • Richard Fortuniewicz (Varsity Soccer $4,844. and Varsity Softball $5,383.) , Eileen Torres (Varsity Softball $5,383.), Anthony Martinez (JV Baseball $3,899.) and Carl Jenkins (Varsity Football $7,164. and Varsity Baseball $5,383.) were all hired as coaches for the district and their stipends for coaching were also indicated in the overtime column in error.

    • Through an aggressive Board of Education policy, which was faxed to The Journal News, as well as diligent, continual monitoring by this administration, total overtime expenditures continue to decline and overtime abuses have been eradicated.

Bernard Pierorazio officially appointed in December 2005.

                2005-2006 – Total overtime $8,065,563

28 employees violated the Board Overtime cap, averaging $1,750 in overtime @ a cost of $49,000.00

                2006-2007 – Total overtime $7,716,716.00

2 employees were given permission to exceed the cap @ a cost of $6,600.00

    2007-2008 – Total overtime $7,259,687.00 through June 5th

3 employees were given permission to exceed the cap @ a cost of $2440.00

    • The vast majority of overtime for certificated staff (administrators, teachers, psychologists, social workers) is grant funded; not from the general fund (local dollars).

    • Please note for Journal News readers that the "Retro Pay" column includes three-years of retroactive compensation and was paid in 2007.

    • YonkersŐ principal salaries are low in comparison to Westchester County. Both elementary and high school principal salaries are in the first quartile countywide. Principals are very stable, in fact over the past 5 years we have only lost principals to retirement.
